The overall purpose of the role
We are looking for a qualified Study Skills Tutor (ASC) for students with a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Conditions, who can support, motivate and encourage students to develop and achieve their full potential. Ideally, you will have experience in higher education establishment. You will have the ability to be sensitive to students’ needs and learning styles and should have an interest in and understanding of additional support needs.
The Specialist one-to-one study skills and strategy support autism (SS:ASC) role can be recommended for students with autism spectrum conditions (ASC), attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
This specialist one-to-one support focuses on helping students to develop study skills and strategies to work effectively in a higher education context in the presence of their condition. It should be tailored to a student’s individual needs, and support workers delivering this role should set out clear goals and timescales for achieving these goals. A reducing level of support to enable independence should be agreed, where it is appropriate.
Support workers undertaking this role should have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of autistic thinking and learning, together with an awareness of the strengths which students with these conditions can bring to a learning situation and the skills to help students make use of these strengths and overcome barriers to learning. An understanding of relevant assistive technology (AT) is also desirable.
Main duties and responsibilities                  Â
- An Enhanced DBS valid in the last 3 years.
- Be registered with HMRC as self-employed or be willing to obtain a Unique Tax Reference through HMRC.
- Provide one to one study skills tuition to students enabling them to develop independent learning strategies.
- To provide bespoke sessions for each student according to the needs of the individual student.
- Deliver tuition according to Clarion guidelines and code of conduct.
- A flexible approach to working hours is required.
- Manage paperwork effectively, i.e. completing time sheets and Individual Learning Plans.
- You will be expected to represent Clarion in a professional manner, this includes adhering to our policies regarding confidentiality and safeguarding.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
This is a very specialised role which requires extensive qualifications to include a mandatory qualification (eg; a degree), a Teaching qualification (eg: PGCE) and Comprehensive Training (eg face to face course in Autism provided by NAS).
